Tuesday's Tip

Tuesday's Tip:

(this one is for you juniors out there)

As you are trying to decide what classes to take next year remember this... colleges are impressed when they see four years of Language, Math and Science classes on your transcript, even liberal arts colleges like Saint Michael's! Picking French 5, Calculus or Physics over electives is generally a good idea. Being successful in those courses is even better!

Contest for February

You read right! The SMC Bloggers are doing a new contest. We want to know what YOU want to read about in our blogs.

Leave a comment on this post with a creative, fun, unique topic for a blog post that you wish we'd write about (don't forget name and email, so we can contact you if you win). All of the Bloggers will get together at the end of February to decide which ideas we like best. Feel free to leave as many blog topics as you want. If we pick your suggestion then you will win a fun prize! Then check back and see us blogging YOUR ideas! The contest will end on February 28th so get those creative juices flowing.

AND don't forget about our first SMC Blogger chat of the Spring Semester: This Thursday night from 7-9PM. Come chat with us about anything and everything SMC !

Best,
Mallory

*Remember, only High School students can win the prizes but EVERYONE can contribute their topics!

Using Photoshop

I used Photoshop to "fix" the first SMC flag. As you can see it is blowing in the wind and dirty.

The newest YouTube video!

Hi everyone!

It has been a very busy couple of weeks in the Admission office as our Early Action deadlines have come and gone. Counselors are busy reviewing files and everyone is working hard to process the applications that are sent our way. Please watch this video for further insight!

College Applications

It is that time for sending in your application to
Saint Michael's College and any other college you are applying to. Like many schools, SMC uses the Common Application. Our deadlines are November 01, December 01, and February 01. Visit our website for specific application information.

Why so many deadlines?
Well there are benefits to applying early! Students will hear back from us within two months with our decision on their acceptance. Students will also receive their merit scholarship information from our Office of Financial Aid. In today's economic times, Saint Michael's College is more than aware of the importance financial aid will play in a student's decision on where they enroll. For all three application deadlines you still have until May 01 to make your decision!

What does Saint Michael's look for?
The profile student at Saint Michael's College is one who is looking to be actively engaged in the campus community. Notice that I didn't give you numbers or stats immediately. Why? Because Saint Michael's looks at students holistically. We want to see who you are from every angle. Grades/SAT's are certainly included in that but most importantly we need to know that YOU will be a positive contributor to our community.

But of course, everyone wants statistics. Overall we find that a student in the top 25% of their class, typically a B/B+ student or better, with SAT's ranging between 1600-2000 (or ACT's of 23-28) will fair well in our admission process. We require 2 letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one from your guidance counselor. Bit of advice... sending 3 or 4 letters is fine, but anything more than that becomes repetitive and overwhelming for whomever is reading your application.

Here is a link for a more in depth discussion on how decisions are made.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have on your application at mwood@smcvt.edu. I know (remember) how stressful this process can be! Best of luck, and I will look forward to reviewing your application!

Take Care,
Mallory
